Beginning Class Comments

As you start to explore literacy instruction, what are your questions? What do you need to know more about?

  1. Dawn, I agree with you. I really enjoy reading about strategies to use in the classroom, but when it comes time to implement them, it doesn't go as smoothly as I had hoped. I also hope this class can provide numerous ways to help students succeed.

The articles we read last week focused a lot on teacher training and instructional practices. We all go into this field hoping to be effective teachers (I hope!). We expect that the colleges we attend will properly prepare us to do this. But the debates in these articles show that being properly prepared comes in a variety of "right" ways.... Meanwhile, the push of common core standards and accountability focus on student outcomes on standardized tests. It all seems like a whirlwind of positions, ideas, and practices.

  2. I feel exactly the same as the two of you above me:) I would love to learn effective literacy strategies for all sorts of different groups. (Guided reading, whole group, students with disabilities, small group, one on one etc.) Like previously stated, I thought I had great strategies for the class that did not end up going as smoothly.

I also would like to learn about Common Core Standards as much as possible. This is great for my future classroom and even interviewing.

I agree with Kristina. I need to learn to incorporate the common core standards into workable lesson plans. It will show administrators we are ready to be accountable for what the state is asking. Also the more practice we get using the standards the more confident we will be in using them and developing the lesson plans from them as NYS continues to adopt the different new subject areas in the Common Core.
